Choosing the right timber for your deck is a key decision that impacts the look, longevity, and maintenance of your outdoor space. Begin by considering your local climate—if you live in a region with high humidity or regular rainfall, hardwoods such as Kwila (Merbau), Garapa, or Vitex are excellent choices due to their natural resistance to moisture, insects, and decay. In milder or drier climates, treated softwoods like Pine may be a more budget-friendly option and still perform well with proper care. It’s also important to think about how exposed your deck will be to sun, rain, and heavy foot traffic, as this will influence the best type of timber to use.

Beyond environmental conditions, your choice will also depend on appearance and budget. Hardwoods typically offer rich, deep tones and attractive grain patterns, delivering a high-end finish, although they tend to come at a higher price. Softwoods are usually lighter in colour and more affordable, but they may need more frequent staining or sealing to keep them looking their best.

Sustainability is another vital factor—opt for timber that comes from responsibly managed forests, ideally certified by FSC® or PEFC™. By balancing these considerations, you can choose a decking timber that not only complements your home and garden but also performs well for years to come.
